This is part of a series of articles that go over the steps I’m taking to learn Flash CS3. The project’s goal is to develop an RPG similar to those published by Square in the mid/late 1990’s. (Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI, etc..)

Updated: The tile engine discussed in this post has since been significantly cleaned-up and improved. This tile engine is packaged up with example applications and is available for download here.

My initial thought on doing tiles in Flash would be to create an array of movieClip objects. Each of these movieClips would hold the bitMap data of the tile they represent as well as logic to make them appear and disappear depending on if they were in the viewPort or not. I had a hunch that this wouldn’t have been the smartest route to take as the performance was likely going to be poor. Poor performance would then limit what I could do with my engine.
