Kongregate

March 19, 2009

As I’ve been relearning Flash and wrapping my brain around Actionscript 3.0 I’ve also been fascinated with the changes in the Flash Gaming Community.

Back in my day the only real player in the Flash gaming portal sector was Newgrounds. A couple of early Flash 4 gems stood out and acted as a vision of what could come. It was a more innocent time and we all stayed entertained with Icebox Flash Mini-Toons (Elvis & Jack Mysteries FTW!)

Fast forward to 2009 and there are a lot more Flash gaming portals on the intertubes. But the one that has really caught my eye is Kongregate. I found them after seeing a couple of games mentioned on Kotaku. What really sets them apart in my mind is the Kong API stuff they have going on. Developers make more ad revenue by adopting this API which creates a nice Xbox Live esque community feel. The API allows for achievements, score tracking, unified chatting throughout the site, and more. This makes Kongregate greater than the sum of the Flash games it hosts. It actually unites them into a a nice community.

I’ll be watching Kongregate closely as it matures. In the meantime, join me in playing two of the greatest Flash games on the internet. These deserve all the ad revenue they can get!
