Marathon Lead-Up

April 10, 2009

Last year I started running. My first race was the Vancouver Sun Run 10k. I came in under an hour and was pleased so I decided to see how far I could take this. I signed up for my first half-marathon.

All last summer I trained hard. I even ran the Nike+ 10k race in under 50 minutes. The Royal Victoria Marathon was on Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend last October. It was a tough 21.1 K but I managed to sneak in under 2 hours. I was pleased again. I ended up doing 2 more half-marathons before 2008 came to a close breaking 1:55 both times. It was time to sign up for a new challenge.

My parents used to be runners. My dad even did Boston a couple of times. So when I told them I registered for the Vancouver Marathon they were pleased.

I’ve been training pretty hard since January. Maybe not as hard as I should, but fairly hard. My weekend long runs are getting tough. Last weekend I hit 30k and its amazing how significantly harder full-marathon training is in comparison to a half.

On Saturday I peak my weekend runs at 32k. Then I scale back until race day. I’m getting pretty scared. You go into your first marathon without ever doing the full distance. I don’t like that sort of unpredictability.

My dad called yesterday and will be flying out to see me run. I’m quite excited! Time to buckle down and finish off my last 3 weeks of training. Race day is May 3rd.
