I spent a few minutes this morning getting Roller Derby 20XX up and running on the Android Flash 10.1 Beta. I’m actually quite surprised by how well it runs and how quickly I was able to get it working.
A few things:
- Mouse clicks are useless. For some reason a mouse click (simulated via a touch screen press or via a trackball press) is taking about 0.5seconds to register which makes them useless for timing specific operations.
- The trackball is awesome for simulated keyboard input. VERY responsive feedback and it is pre-mapped to the arrow keys. I have jumped assigned to “UP” which means if you scroll the wheel up, the character jumps really well. It is even working with my velocity style jumps so if you whip that trackball up hard, the character jumps higher.
- Performance is surprising.I’m really impressed with the performance. It’s quite smooth.
Anyway, this is what I put together with about 10 minutes of porting work. It isn’t hard at all to design a Flash project with Android in mind. The biggest key will be ensuring the control scheme can map properly but I think the trackball is the best solution here so far.
Based on my first impression, this is going to be a very viable platform for Flash developers. I hope Adobe and Google keep up this strong partnership.
