[refrag] is a personal portfolio, blog and web playground for Kayla Kinnunen. Born in Thunder Bay Ontario, Kayla is currently living in Vancouver BC.

Since firing up Super Mario Bros. on the NES I always knew video games would be an important part of my life. I work at Roadhouse Interactive as a Game Director. Prior to this I was at Electronic Arts Canada for just over 10 years. I participate in the local indie-scene at meet-ups and game jams, have given talks at conferences and lectures at schools, and I mentor game design students.

My values:

  1. Games can change the world and we’ve only scratched the surface in terms of what games can be.
  2. Everyone has the right to express themselves creatively and should have the opportunity to use games for this expression. Game development barriers need to be lowered.
  3. Technology (and games as an extension of technology) should serve to enhance our humanity and bring us closer together.

Other things I try to live by:

  1. Never coast. In roller-derby the best advice I ever got was to always be actively speeding up or slowing down. Coasting makes you less agile and less effective and it makes you a big target. A favourite boss of mine also said “The worst thing a leader can do on a project is to just be present. It’s too easy to not have an impact.” which is kind of the same thing.
  2. Focus on Focus. There’s a lot of noise and it takes effort to cut through and spend brain-cycles on the 1 thing that is most important at any time.
  3. Be excited! There’s too much cynicism in the world. Excitement is contagious and holy cow are there a lot of things in the world to get excited about.

I like video games, coffee, wine, running, roller derby, gadgets, Apple products, music and movies so expect my content to reflect these interests.

Hi Kayla!

My name is Ali and I am a producer on a new video game show for a major cable network (I apologize for my vagueness; I am not currently at liberty to reveal said network yet since an official announcement has not yet been made). I would like to talk to you regarding the possibility of being cast as one of the panelists on our show! We are looking for people who are comfortable critiquing and judging game developers, and I heard about you through PAX!

The premise of the show is similar to Shark Tank, but only deals with the tech world (think- video games, apps, etc.) At the end of each episode, the panelists will select a winner, who will receive a reward of some sort having to do with their game!

Filming should take place sometime in the fall in Los Angeles. I would love to speak with you further about participating! I always feel that a 15-minute Skype interview is the best way to go. :) Please call or email me if you are interested.

Thank you so much for your time! I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Kayla,

My name is Camila Ramos and I am the Comunity Engagement Coordinator at the ACT Arts Centre in Maple Ridge. I am contacting you today because we are planning an event for 2017 Youth Week- CRe8, and we would love to see if you would be interested in being part of our participating arts professionals.

CRE8 is an annual event held at the ACT Arts Centre where youth participants age 13-18 join our professional panel of artists who share their experiences in the industry and lead participants in workshops of their choosing. These are unique opportunities that they would not normally have exposure to.

Each year a group of youth art ambassadors come together to help plan the event and choose the arts field of their interest. One of the areas they picked this year was game design, and we would love to see knwo if you would be interested in leading a 2 hours workshop for our participating youth.

We are looking for professionals that not only have experience in the field, but that also share a passion for education. The event will take place on May 1, 2017 here at the ACT Arts Centre.

Please let me know if this would be of interest to you, and I will be glad to send further information. We have created a one pager with all the information, but I am unable to send it through here.

I look forward to your response.
Camila Ramos Bravo
Community Engagement Coordinator
