Photographing Fireworks

July 21, 2009

Up in Quesnel for the weekend I had a rare opportunity to photograph fireworks at close range. As part of the Billy Barker Days celebration fireworks are shot off from the Johnston family farm (Melinda’s mother’s property). We got seats about as close as you’d want to get safely.

This was my first attempt at snapping shots of fireworks and I have to say I’m pleased with my results. Unfortunately the tripod I had at my disposal was crap so I couldn’t lock the Y-axis. Also my FA-50mm lens didn’t let me zoom out as much as I would have liked.

But I played, imagining the light in the sky painting a picture as it burned into the CCD sensor. Some of the best photos were obtained when I decided to screw the camera’s timing advice. Blub mode ftw!

Finally updated the photo rotator in the top right of this page. It now shows select photo’s I’ve taken.
I’m still learning my new DSLR but if you’re interested in seeing what I’m doing, check out my Flickr page.
